Pre-Master Electrician Training

To be eligible for an ECRA/ESA Master Electrician Licence the applicant shall;

  1. Be at least 18 years of age;
  2. Demonstrate at least 3 years experience,
    a) as a Construction and Maintenance Electrician, Domestic and Rural Electrician, or an Industrial Electrician Certificate of Qualification carrying out work under a valid certificate of qualification (C of Q), or
    b) working for an electrical contractor as a licensed Professional Engineer, and be registered with the Professional Engineers of Ontario, or
    c) working for an electrical contractor in the capacity of a Certified Engineering Technician or a Certified Engineering Technologist registered with the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists;
  3. Have passed the Master Electrician Qualifying Examination within the 12 month period preceding the date of the licence application; and
  4. Not owe the ESA any money for which payment arrangements have not been made.

Pre-Master Electrician Preparatory Training

ESA offers pre-master electrician preparatory training courses across Ontario, and administers the Master Electrician qualifying examination.

Pre-Master Electrician Training Course Description

The Pre-Master Electrician Preparatory Training Course is designed to assist those preparing to write the qualifying Master Electrician Examination.

This course reviews portions of the Electrical Safety Code, the Ontario Building Code, the Ontario Health and Safety Act, important legislation, electrical calculations, and common trade & business practices. 

It has recently been updated to incorporate the changes made to relevant legislation and the 2009 Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC).  Courses starting after September 1, 2009  will be based on  the  material covered in the 2009 Pre Master Electrician Course Examination Information Package (see below). 

If you are unsure which code book will be used during  a course or examination you have signed up for please refer to the Pre-Master Training Course and Master Electrician Examination Schedule below. The corresponding Ontario Electrical Safety Code book version will be listed beside the course or examination you have signed up for.  If after referring to the schedule you are still unsure, please contact our Customer Service Centre at 1-877-ESA-SAFE (372-7233) to verify with a representative.

Master Electrician Exam

This Master Electrician Examination is only offered through the Electrical Safety Authority.  Examination dates are posted  in the Pre-Master Training Course and Master Electrician Examination Schedule below. To apply to write the examination submit a completed Pre-Master Examination Application Form (see below) and fax it to (905) 712-3020.

The Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC) book was updated in spring 2009. The Master Electrician Examination is now based on the updated Ontario Electrical Safety Code 24th Edition 2009.  If you need to purchase the new Code (2009) call Orderline at 1-888-361-0003.
